Some lands carry on a bit of history
This air is just breathed in the Terre di Giovi, a handful of Alexandrian municipalities.
suspended between the mountains and the sea. On these roads between hills and plains, once on the plain
the young Fausto Coppi made the shuttle load of cold cuts, when he worked as an apprentice in the
butcher’s shop in Novi Ligure to set aside the money for his first racing bike.
And it wasn’t only the very champions who made these lands immortal: Tortona, Castellania and Novi boast among theirs;
his brother Serse Coppi, Costante Girardengo, Giovanni Cuniolo and Luigi Malabrocca
were also illustrious,
as well as other well-known and lesser known faces that have made the history of great cycling. Too much glory not to create at least one Museum of Cycling. But it was still not enough.
Il Parco del Ciclismo dei Colli di Coppi: the project
In order to revive the splendours of great cycling, it is sometimes enough to celebrate it with cycling tourism. The quiet pass of those who discover slowly the places they visit, in fact, can merge harmoniously with sports cycling. The general objective is a virtuous and sustainable redevelopment of the territory.
With this in mind, a memorandum of understanding was signed between 26 municipalities in the Scrivia river basin. The agreement provides for the creation of a Parco del Ciclismo dei Colli di Coppi, a cycleway along the Scrivia in memory of the athlete.
In addition to the route (red marked), the project also includes a number of other interventions, including the following:
a series of cycle paths in the surrounding hills and the Scrivia basin, for a total of 263 km;
a cycling-themed world café;
the redevelopment of a series of infrastructures, first of all an old disused methane pipeline that could be used to connect the two banks of the Scrivia as a cycle/pedestrian passage between the Cistercian Abbey of Rivalta Scrivia and the Colli di Coppi.
synergy with the accommodation facilities of the territory to accommodate cyclists offering all the excellence of food and wine and cultural excellence.
This bike-friendly “passage” is of crucial importance for all cycling tourism in Northern Italy. In fact, if it is a north-south axis, it would connect the route of three or four longer cycleways:
the famous Ven. To., the Po cycle route from Venice to Turin (branded in blue on the map);
the network of Ligurian cycleways along the coast (mark in green on the map);
Via Romea Francigena, a pilgrimage road from London to Rome and then to Brindisi, often also used by cyclists;
the Eurovelo 8 (Mediterranean Route from Cadiz to Athens) and Eurovelo 7 (Sun Route from North Cape to Malta) routes
The Mythical
On the roads of the Parco del Ciclismo dei Colli di Coppi, every year a cycling event takes place, as a ritual. Because the myth is more of a cycling touristic, more of a cyclist. The Mythics is a celebration on the tip of pedals, which makes the epic of the Champions alive. A re-enactment in vintage bikes on the Tortona hills, along white roads and vineyards, until you are breathless. But also a phenomenon of customs and culture of past years, when cycling was a bit more romantic. For if your legs were missing, replace them with your heart and push.
La Mitica is a bicycle event in which competition does not count
and where the pleasure of cycling on your bike does not count, but merges with a series of other values.
The (re)discovery of the territory, the strong and indomitable bond that exists with it, culture and history. And, in addition to being a stage of the Giro d’ Italia d’ Epoca, it is part of that cycling history circuit that grants the patent of the Championships to those who complete all 6 races: the Ovada Championships, the Canavesana of Albiano d’ Ivrea, the Langarola of Grinzane Cavour, the Classica of Pinerolo and the Superba of Genoa Nervi.
For three days a year, at the end of June, Castellania and the villages in the Parco del Ciclismo dei Colli di Coppi (of the Scrivia) are tinged with woolen shirts.
typical of cycling from the early’ 900 until the’ 80s, and a river of Bianchi, Olmo, Legnano, Fiorelli strictly made of steel, as well as steel are also the oldest Wolsit, Maino and many other mythical “cars”, as were called at the time bicycles, bite the dirt with their tubular.
This year the appointment is 22,23 and 24 June, and the entries are open from 1 March.
